ABOUT THE ROLE

Under the direction of the Senior Program Director, the Sports Manager is responsible for the effective operation of the assigned department. Responsibility may include but is not limited to: program operation, program development and growth, participant satisfaction, participant and member retention, safety, community collaborations, and site supervision. The Sports Manager is accountable for delivering exceptional and outstanding programs and service to YMCA members, participants and volunteers in partnership with a larger team.  They are vital member of YMCA leadership staff and a highly visible representative of the YMCA mission, core values and are accountable for knowing and properly executing all YMCA policies and procedures.  

This position will be located in the Buncombe County service area.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Models inclusive management behaviors and embraces all dimensions of diversity by building strong teams that apply their diverse skills and perspectives to advancing our mission
  • Implements a results-based management approach and ensures service line/department is actively working towards association-level objectives by assessing progress towards identified goals/KPIs, provides on-going coaching and feedback and discusses development opportunities 
  • Coordinate the planning, organization, and scheduling of all games, facilities, officials, and scorekeepers for YMCA sports and activities for assigned centers.
  • Manage athletic program activities; including the set up and facilitation of practices and game days. 
  • Ensuring program standards, equipment needs, and field/facility maintenance are consistent with association expectations.
  • When needed, officiate or coach youth soccer, basketball, flag football, volleyball or any particular sport the centers may provide.
  • Hire, train and recruit volunteer coaches. 
  • Monitor and maintain necessary equipment through scheduled preventative maintenance.
  • Proficiency in a variety of computer applications including Outlook, DAXKO Systems, Microsoft Word, Teams and Excel.
  • Ability to work nights and weekends
  • Perform quality work within given deadlines and expectations with direct supervision.
  • Support the hiring, training, and site supervision of staff within department.
  • Adhere to department’s budget.
  • Contribute to the creation of KPI targets and evaluate performance around achieving goals while motivating staff. 
  • Adhere to the Association’s risk management program to ensure safe facilities and programs for members, volunteers and staff.
  • Perform office work as needed such as filing, copying and record keeping.  Ensure that all necessary paperwork and forms are accurately completed.
  • Develop committed relationships. Share knowledge of programs, events and resources with members and participants throughout the facility and within the community when representing the YMCA. 
  • Support Annual Campaign by ensuring all staff is asked to give; by collecting and sharing stories of Y impact; and by engaging department team in support of campaign efforts.
  • Responsible for other duties as assigned.

ABOUT YOU

Qualifications

  • High School diploma.
  • 2-3 Years’ experience in volunteer recruitment and training and sports program management.
  • Ability to direct operations through supervision of site staff/volunteers, promotion, and program development.
  • CPR and First Aid certifications may be required.
  • Must be able to lift/move objects up to 50lbs., and physically and visually oversee the scope of various sports venues at the pace of play.
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field preferred.
  • Leader certification preferred, or obtained within two years from date of hire.
  • Multi-site management/coordination of services experience preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Outlook, and other computer programs is necessary to perform the job duties.
